Woman Struck and Killed by Union Pacific Freight Train
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY - A 35-year-old woman was tragically killed June 29th after being struck by a Union Pacific freight train, reports the San Bernardino Sun. At approximately 12:24 p.m., Ontario police found the woman on the Union Pacific railroad tracks about 200 feet west of the corner of Lemon Avenue and State Street, where she was pronounced dead at the scene.
At this point there are more questions than answers as to how and why this accident occurred. Situations such as this one are a tragic reminder of the growing pedestrian fatality rate in the state. In 2010, California had the highest number of pedestrian accident fatalities in the nation.

Toyota announced a recall of 80,000 Hybrid sport utility vehicles Wednesday, June 29th. According to a 10 News report, the recall includes 2006 and 2007 models of the Highlander Hybrid and Lexus RX 400h sold in the U.S. According to the automaker, some models contain faulty electronics systems that may cause the vehicle's hybrid drive system to fail. Toyota is working on obtaining the necessary replacement parts and once the parts are available, owners will be notified of the recall by first class mail in mid-July 2011. According to the Orange County Register, McNeil Consumer Healthcare, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, issued a recall for more than 60,000 bottles of Tylenol Extra Strength Tablets. The product is being pulled from store shelves because of a musty odor caused by a chemical called TBA, which is a byproduct of a preservative in shipping palettes. The odor has caused minor cases of nausea and anyone who has bought the product should stop using it immediately. SAN JUAQUIN COUNTY - A Lodi man was tragically killed in a single-vehicle car accident around 2:50 a.m. Sunday morning when his Toyota Tacoma struck a guardrail and then a tree on Highway 88. The 21-year-old victim, whose name has not been released, was traveling east of Clements Road, reports the Lodi News-Sentinel.
COARSEGOLD - Three people, including a four-year-old girl were injured in a head-on collision on Highway 41 south of Coursegold, the Fresno Bee reported. The accident was reported just north of Road 200 at about 12:16 p.m. on Wednesday, June 22, 2011. According to news reports, A 53-year-old Oakhurst man lost control of his Ford truck when a front tire blew out. His vehicle collided head-on with a car driven by a 28-year-old Coarsegold woman. She suffered major leg injuries and was taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno. A 4-year-old girl suffered major injuries to her arm. A baby in the vehicle was not injured. The two young girls were taken to Children's Hospital Central California. The driver of the Ford truck suffered minor injuries and was not taken to the hospital.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY - A 51-year-old Phoenix man tragically was killed Monday afternoon in a head-on collision on US 95, the Desert Dispatch reported. The victim was identified by the San Bernardino County Sheriff-Coroner as Daniel John DiRusso. According to news accounts, DiRusso was driving a 2010 Nissan Versa southbound on US 95 when his vehicle collided with a northbound 2004 GMC Envoy. The accident was reported 12 miles south of Needles at 4:18 p.m. According to the Desert Dispatch, DiRusso died at the scene of the crash. It was not clear whether the driver of the GMC was injured.
NORTHERN VACAVILLE - A four-vehicle crash Monday evening on Interstate 80 left 42-year-old Kelly Myers critically injured, the Vacaville Reporter said. According to news accounts, at about 8:05 p.m., Myers was driving a navy blue Dodge van westbound on I-80, just east of the Interstate 505 onramp, when her vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle. The impact caused Myers to lose control of her van and collide with a Caltrans vehicle parked in a construction zone. The van overturned and landed on its roof. Myers suffered major head-injuries as a result of the collision, and was flown by CALSTAR air ambulance to University of California, Davis Medical Center in Sacramento. Her 14-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter were taken to VacaValley Hospital where they were treated and later released. A Santa Cruz man suffered minor injuries after his silver Honda CRV was rear-ended by a black 2004 Acura sedan driven by Fredy Herrera, 36, of San Leandro. Witnesses reported seeing Herrera "driving well over 100 mph" prior to the collision.
SALINAS - Seven people were injured, including three seriously, following a head-on collision Monday afternoon on Alisal Road, east of the Salinas airport, the CHP reported. The Monterey County crash was reported at 1:42 p.m. near Old Stage Road. According to news reports, a blue Ford Explorer was travelling southbound, while a black Volkswagen Jetta was travelling north. The CHP reported that the driver of the Jetta crossed into the southbound lane and smashed head-on into the Ford Explorer. Witnesses reported both vehicles appeared to be travelling within the 55 mph speed limit. Two occupants in the Jetta and five people in the Ford Explorer were injured. Three people were taken by ground ambulance to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, and four were flown by helicopter to Bay Area hospitals.

WOODLAND - A bicyclist suffered potentially life-threatening injuries Friday afternoon after being struck by a Toyota Prius, the Daily Democrat reported. The accident occurred around 12:45 p.m. on June 17th at the corner of East Main and East Streets. The cyclist, identified only as a man in his 50's, was transported by helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center. The driver of the Prius, a 59-year-old Woodland woman, was not injured. The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Woodland Police Department.
WOODLAND - A two-vehicle crash involving a silver Ford Taurus and a Chrysler Town & Country minivan left three people injured Sunday afternoon, the Daily Democrat reported. The accident occurred on the southbound North West Street onramp around 3:58 a.m. when the driver of the Ford swerved into the center divider and then changed directions into oncoming traffic, T-boning the Chrysler minivan.
ASHLAND - The San Jose Mercury News reported a 56-year-old San Leandro man died Wednesday morning in a car vs. bicycle accident at Fairmont Drive and Foothill Boulevard. The accident was reported at about 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. According to news accounts, Timothy Bucher was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a 1995 Honda Civic driven eastbound on Fairmont Drive. Bucher, who was wearing a helmet, was taken to Eden Medical Center in Castro Valley, where he died. The driver of the Honda, a 32-year-old San Francisco woman, was not injured.
SAN CLEMENTE - Ten people suffered injuries ranging from minor to major following a multi-vehicle car accident Wednesday afternoon, the Orange County Register reported. The accident reportedly began in the fast lane of Interstate 5, near Avenida Pico, when the driver of a Dodge rear-ended a Nissan. The impact of the collision sent the Nissan into the No. 2 lane where it collided with a Mercedes-Benz. The 26-year-old male driver of the Nissan and five passengers in the vehicle were taken to Mission Hospital. Two of the occupants suffered moderate injuries, two suffered major injuries, and two suffered minor injuries. Four occupants of the Dodge were taken to UCI Medical Center with minor injuries. The driver of the Mercedes, a 55-year-old Carlsbad man, was apparently not hurt.
VISALIA - A 60-year-old Visalia woman suffered major injuries Sunday night when she was hit by a BMW on Chinowth Street, the Visalia-Times Delta reported. The Tulare County accident was reported at about 9:40 p.m. just south of Noble Avenue. The victim, Janet Cross, 60, was walking west across Chinowth when she was hit by the 2010 BMW driven by Edmund Auyeung, 52, of Visalia. Cross was taken by ambulance to Kaweah Delta Hospital with major injuries. The cause of the accident is under investigation. Based on the very limited details provided in the news report, it is not clear why this June 12th car vs. pedestrian accident occurred, and whether the driver of the car could have done anything to prevent hitting Cross.
