SALINAS - Seven people were injured, including three seriously, following a head-on collision Monday afternoon on Alisal Road, east of the Salinas airport, the CHP reported. The Monterey County crash was reported at 1:42 p.m. near Old Stage Road. According to news reports, a blue Ford Explorer was travelling southbound, while a black Volkswagen Jetta was travelling north. The CHP reported that the driver of the Jetta crossed into the southbound lane and smashed head-on into the Ford Explorer. Witnesses reported both vehicles appeared to be travelling within the 55 mph speed limit. Two occupants in the Jetta and five people in the Ford Explorer were injured. Three people were taken by ground ambulance to Natividad Medical Center in Salinas, and four were flown by helicopter to Bay Area hospitals.

Based on the news reports, it is not clear why the driver of the Jetta veered into oncoming traffic. The CHP reported that it is not believed that alcohol or drugs played a role. Hopefully, the investigation will reveal exactly what happened and why.
